10 practices in Kirby is a hell of a lot different from Mark Richt on get after players who are more into how fast they are or how big they are and feel like the game will come to them. There are 2 types of people, those who hate to lose and WANT to compete therefore, and those who just are not that way. Mark Richt was NOT that way. A Coach has to get EVERYONE competing and this requires the Coach to GET IN THEIR GRILLES and get after them. Mark Richt was NOT this guy.
This up-coming Saturday’s scrimmage Kirby says he is going to find his best 22 his best 33 and best 44.
Kirby also told the players after our 10th Spring Practice today that if they want to play in the NFL that they will be REQUIRED with the 53-man limit to do well on Special Teams. This too is a big HUGE break with the past with Mark Richt who always just played walk-ons on special teams. And our special teams were # 100 in nation annually as a result. Kirby is playing and challenging these guys who want to go to the NFL and have all these talented wonderful ladies in their lives that they MUST play special teams well. “If you want to go to the NFL then you must realize that you must play very well on special teams and the best way to make an NFL roster is to get after that NOW.”
Kirby has 3 Coordinators. Shane Beamer is Special Teams’ Coordinator. Kirby says that you can NOT have top special teams with duties split-up between 3 or 4 guys. That if you do that instead that you don’t FOCUS on the special teams where Kirby is a firm believer in EMPHASIZING Special Teams. This is what I tried to get Mark Richt to do only he called us ALL noise and was stubborn about this too – a NON-CHRISTIAN trait.
